Centrica achieves record progress for sales of 2006/7 gas storage capacity
Centrica Storage, a subsidiary of Centrica plc, today announced that its sales
of storage capacity for 2006/7 at Rough, the UK's largest gas storage facility,
have exceeded 90% of capacity available to non Centrica companies. Storage sales
are more advanced than in any previous year, reflecting the increased demand for
storage capacity from new and existing customers.
Bruce Walker, Managing Director of Centrica Storage, said: 'This is the earliest
date that storage sales of this volume has been achieved and underlines the
continuing demand for storage capacity in the UK going forward.
'The UK is moving from a gas surplus to a situation where the bulk of our
requirements will be imported, with Rough and other storage facilities playing a
key part in providing the flexibility to balance those needs. This also signals
how Centrica's sustained investment to enhance the operation of this strategic
facility is starting to deliver and add value.'
Notes to editors:
1/ Rough is the UK's largest gas storage facility, storing 100 billion cubic
feet (bcf) of gas. It can meet approximately 10% of the UK's peak day gas demand
2/ On November 1, Rough had the highest ever level of gas in store compared to
previous years. It has sold an additional 17bcf of storage capacity for winter
2005, in addition to the 100bcf of working capacity. Through selling 30 million
therms of 'indigenous gas' within Rough this winter, the facility's peak
deliverability has been increased from 42 million cubic metres of gas per day to
44.8 million cubic metres. This equates to supplying gas to heat an additional
65,000 homes every day over the peak winter period.
