Tate & Lyle PLC was informed on 10 November 2004 that as at 8 November 2004
Barclays PLC and its subsidiaries were holding 26,198,692 ordinary shares in
Tate & Lyle PLC in which they have a material interest which is a notifiable
interest under Section 199 of the Companies Act 1985 being 5.42 per cent. of the
nominal value of the relevant share capital.

Barclays PLC had previously reported holding 19,672,960 ordinary shares in Tate
& Lyle PLC as at 14 October 2004 in which they had a material interest which was
then 4.07 per cent of the nominal value of the relevant share capital.
