Appointment of John Hylands as Non-Executive Director

Alliance Trust PLC is pleased to announce the appointment of John Hylands as a
non-executive director of the Company with immediate effect.

John will join the Audit Committee, becoming its Chairman when the current
Audit Committee Chairman, Gordon McQueen, resigns from the Board on 31 March.

An actuary by profession, John joins Alliance Trust following a career at
Standard Life spanning 28 years. During this time he served as Finance Director
from 2001 to 2005 and successfully led the project for Standard Life's
demutualisation and Stock Exchange listing in 2006.

Listing Rule 9.6.13

The only information to be notified under Listing Rule 9.6.13 is that he is a
director of Ecclesiastical Insurance Office PLC and Ecclesiastical Insurance
Group PLC and was a director of Standard Life plc until March 2007.

As at the date of his appointment as a director Mr Hylands' total interest in
Alliance Trust PLC shares is 57,714 ordinary 2.5p shares, which is 0.009% of
the issued class.
