Merrill Lynch Latin American Investment Trust PLC Directorate The Board of Merrill Lynch Latin American Investment Trust PLC announces with great regret that Mr Fred Packard has decided to retire as a director of the Company with effect from 31 December 2007. Mr Packard was a cofounder of the Company and has served as a director since its launch in 1990. He has made an invaluable contribution to the Company throughout his tenure. The Board is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr. Antonio Monteiro de Castro as a non executive director of the Company with immediate effect. Mr Monteiro de Castro has extensive Latin American experience. He has been the Chief Operating Officer of British American Tobacco ("BAT"), the world's second largest publicly traded tobacco group, since January 2004 and has served as a director of BAT since March 2002. He will be retiring as an executive officer of BAT at the end of 2007. He joined BAT in 1996 as the Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean having served as Vice President of Souza Cruz SA, the Brazilian subsidiary of BAT, since 1989. He became President and CEO of Souza Cruz SA in 1991 and served in such capacity until 1995. Mr. Monteiro de Castro joined the Board of Reynolds American Inc on July 30, 2004. He is also the non executive chairman of Clean Energy Brazil plc and a member of the board of the Getulio Vargas Foundation. Mr. Monteiro de Castro does not have any interest in the Company's shares at the date of his appointment. (5) On 30 October 2000, the UK Secretary of State for Trade and Industry announced the commencement of a confidential investigation into allegations of involvement in tobacco smuggling by British American Tobacco p.l.c. under Section 447 of the Companies Act 1985. On 26 March 2004 the Trade and Industry Secretary announced that the DTI would be taking no further action following its investigation into the affairs of British American Tobacco p.l.c. as no evidence of illegal activity was found.
