Oxford Instruments plc Appointment of Non-Executive Director Oxford Instruments plc, a leading provider of high-technology tools and systems for industry and research, is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Sir Richard Friend as an Independent Non-Executive Director. The appointment takes effect from 1 September 2014. Professor Sir Richard Friend, Fellow of the Royal Society and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, is Cavendish Professor of Physics and a Fellow of St. John's College at the University of Cambridge. His research encompasses the physics, materials science and engineering of semiconductor devices made with carbon-based semiconductors. His research advances have shown that these materials have significant applications in LEDs, solar cells, lasers, and electronics. He was knighted for "services to physics" in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2003. He has also been directly involved in the commercialisation of technology through several spin-out companies from the University of Cambridge.
