Interim Management Statement - 3 months to 30 April 2014 (unaudited)
To achieve long-term capital growth through investment in selected companies in
the Asia Pacific region and the Indian sub-continent, but excluding Japan,
Australia and New Zealand (the `Asia Pacific Region'). Up to a maximum of 20%
of the Company's total assets (at the time of investment) may be invested in
companies incorporated and/or listed outside the Asia Pacific Region, including
Japan, Australia and New Zealand, but whose economic activities are
predominantly within the Asia Pacific Region.
During the 3 month period ended 30 April 2014, the Company's net asset value
and share price total returns were +2.7% and +6.3% respectively both
outperforming the Company's benchmark, the MSCI All Country Asia ex Japan Index
measured in sterling terms on a total return basis, which rose by 2.5%. With
regard to its peer group, the Company ranked sixth (out of eight) in terms of
its net asset value total return performance in the period and fifth in terms
of its share price total return performance. The discount of the Company's
share price to its net asset value per share narrowed to 3.9% at 30 April 2014
from 7.2% at 31 January 2014.
During the three-month period and to the date of this report none of the
Company's shares were repurchased for cancellation.
In the period from 30 April 2014 to 17 June 2014 (the latest practicable date
prior to the issue of this document), the Company's net asset value total
return was 6.6% compared to a rise of 5.0% in the Company's benchmark. The
Company's share price total return was 8.9% during the same period.
Richard Horlick will be retiring from the Board at the conclusion of the
Company's Annual General Meeting, to be held at 10.00am at Skinners' Hall, 8
Dowgate Hill, London EC4R 2SP on Tuesday, 24 June 2014.
An unchanged final dividend for the year of 2.60 pence per ordinary share will
be paid on 27 June 2014 to shareholders on the register on 30 May 2014. The
associated ex-dividend date was 28 May 2014. Last year the dividend was paid on
28 June 2013 to shareholders on the register on 31 May 2013. The associated ex
dividend date was 29 May 2013.
The Company has been entered by the FCA on the register of small registered UK
AIFMs and for so long as the Company remains on the register the Company shall
be precluded from incurring borrowings. The Company's investment policy
provides that the Board, in conjunction with the Company's investment manager,
First State Investment Management (UK) Limited, shall keep the possibility of
borrowings under review, but the use of borrowings is not envisaged except in
exceptional circumstances.
