RM appointed preferred bidder to provide e-Learning services in South Yorkshire
RM plc, the UK's leading supplier of ICT and services to education
establishments, has been appointed preferred bidder to provide a range of
education services to the South Yorkshire e-Learning Programme.
The South Yorkshire e-Learning Programme (which is funded by the European
Regional Development Fund and the European Social Fund through Objective 1, and
by the Learning and Skills Council and Yorkshire Forward) will enable over
37,000 people to access the Internet, engage in e-Learning and gain educational
qualifications. RM will provide the programme with e-Learning content,
training, professional services and managed ICT infrastructure to support adult
and school age learners across South Yorkshire.
As a result of the programme, ICT infrastructure in over 140 educational and
training institutions will be upgraded to the latest technology (including
wireless networking). The project will also provide a learning environment,
which will connect all secondary schools, some special schools, some primary
schools, FE colleges, libraries and community access areas (including 370 small
local businesses).
Commenting on the contract, Tim Pearson, CEO of RM, said:
'The four local authorities of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield
have a bold vision for using technology to drive forward inclusive learning
across South Yorkshire. RM is committed to delivering innovative educational
services that help make that vision real.
'We reported in our recent Trading Update that RM was making good progress in
our strategic project activities. Today's announcement means we've now won five
major projects in the last six months and demonstrates RM's strong capabilities
in delivering sophisticated, long-term education services.'
Steve Farnsworth, Deputy Director of Education in Sheffield, added:
'Not only will this project impact on the education of all our pupils, we
expect everyone to have a significant opportunity to increase their education
and skills because e-Learning allows students to learn at their own pace and in
a place that suits them.'
