MAS selects Trent 900

13 December, 2004 MALAYSIA AIRLINES SELECTS ROLLS-ROYCE TRENT 900 FOR A380 FLEET Rolls-Royce confirmed today (13 December) that Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad (PMB), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines (MAS), had chosen the Trent 900 engine to power its fleet of six Airbus A380 airliners. This takes the Trent 900's market share of A380 firm and option orders to 50 per cent. Mike Terrett, President, Civil Aerospace, Rolls-Royce, said: "We are clearly delighted by this vote of confidence in Rolls-Royce and the Trent 900 in being selected by PMB and MAS. "This is an excellent opportunity for us to build on a long and valued relationship with Malaysia Airlines, which this week is taking delivery of its 17th Boeing 777 powered by Trent 892 engines since 1997. We are very pleased to be playing a central role in the expansion of the MAS fleet." MAS, which becomes the fifth airline to opt for Trent-powered A380s, will utilise the aircraft on routes from Kuala Lumpur to Europe and Australia. Deliveries begin in early 2007. Last month, the Trent 900 achieved on-time certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency. The engine will enter service with A380 launch customer Singapore Airlines in 2006, having also been selected by Lufthansa, Qantas and Virgin Atlantic. The Trent 900 will power the maiden flight of the A380 in the first quarter of 2005. Although it will initially operate at 70,000lb thrust, the Trent 900 was certificated at a rating of 80,000lb, allowing margin for growth. It will be the fourth version of the Trent series to enter service. Its development has followed the progressive, low-risk strategy which draws on in-service experience from previous variants, operating since 1995.
