TRENT 1000 WINS SECOND ORDER FOR BOEING 787 VIP
The Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 has been selected by Hong Kong real estate tycoon,
Joseph Lau, to power his Boeing 787-8 VIP aircraft on order from Boeing
Business Jets.
This agreement makes Mr. Lau the launch customer for the Trent-powered 787 VIP
in Asia and is the second time the Trent 1000 has been selected for a 787
configured for corporate or VIP use.
Mark King, Chief Commercial Officer - Civil Large Engines for Rolls-Royce,
said: " From our experience as the leading engine supplier in the corporate jet
sector, we understand the needs of VIP operators. Our customers are now ranking
the environmental credentials of an engine alongside exceptional reliability
and low cost of ownership, making the Trent 1000 the best fit for corporate and
VIP operations, and we are delighted that Mr Lau has recognised this with his
engine selection."
As the launch engine for the 787, the Trent 1000 will be installed on the first
aircraft that will roll out of the Boeing factory this Sunday, 8th July.
NOTE TO EDITORS:
1. The Trent 1000 is the launch engine for all variants of the 787 and is
specifically designed to generate additional power for the airframe's
unique range of electric systems. The engine has now completed the majority
of testing required for engine certification by the airworthiness
authorities, which is on track for later this year, before it powers the
Dreamliner on its maiden flight.
2. Including the aircraft involved in today's announcement, firm and option
orders have been placed for a total of 190 Trent 1000-powered Boeing 787s
by Air New Zealand, ANA, Icelandair, LOT Polish Airlines, Northwest
Airlines, Blue Panorama, Air China, Monarch, flyglobespan, Avianca and
leasing companies, ILFC, LCAL, Pegasus and CIT.
3. Launch customer, ANA, will begin operating the 787-8 in mid-2008 and will
also introduce the short-range 787-3 in 2010. Air New Zealand will be the
first airline to enter the 787-9 into service, also in 2010.
4. The Trent 1000 is based on the proven Trent family design and incorporates
the latest technological advancements focused on reducing life-cycle costs
and minimising the environmental impact. The engine will benefit from the
introduction of new technologies throughout its lifetime to ensure it
maintains the best fuel efficiency for the 787.
5. The Trent 1000 is the fifth member of the Trent family, the first of which
entered service in 1995. By the time it enters service on the 787, the
flying experience accumulated by all previous Trent engines will total
around 35 million hours.
6. Rolls-Royce is the number one engine manufacturer for corporate jets with
34 percent market share. There are nearly 3,000 corporte aircraft in
service relying on Rolls-Royce power.
7. Rolls-Royce is working hard to improve the environmental impact of its
products. Each year Rolls-Royce, in collaboration with its partners,
invests around £700 million on research and development, two thirds of which
has the objective of reducing the environmental impact of its products. The
primary technology investment area is aimed at reducing noise and emissions.
