ROLLS-ROYCE WINS $400m SHARE OF TIGER AIRWAYS V2500 ORDER
Rolls-Royce has won business worth up to $400 million as its share of an order
for V2500 engines and aftermarket services from Singapore's Tiger Airways. The
contract covers a fleet of up to 50 Airbus A320 family aircraft.
The airline already operates a fleet of nine V2500-powered A320s on routes to
the rest of South East Asia and Australia.
The V2500 is produced by the International Aero Engines consortium (IAE) in
which Rolls-Royce is a senior shareholder. In addition to Rolls-Royce, IAE's
partners are Pratt & Whitney of the United States, the Japanese Aero Engines
Corporation and MTU Aero Engines of Germany.
With a range of thrust from 22,000lb -33,000lb, the V2500-A5 is available to
power the Airbus A319, A320 and A321 as well as the A319 Corporate Jet. More
than 1,300 V2500-powered aircraft have been delivered to over 120 customers to
date, with more than 5,000 engines delivered or on order.
NOTE TO EDITORS:
1. Tiger Airways has been using the V2500 engine for its entire A320 fleet
since 2004.
2. Rolls-Royce is a major player in Singapore's aerospace industry, accounting
for over ten per cent of the country's aerospace output. Through the
company's joint ventures with key local industry partner Singapore Airlines
Engineering Company - Singapore Aero Engine Services Limited (SAESL) and
International Engine Component Overhaul (IECO) - Rolls-Royce currently
employs nearly 1,000 people in Singapore, accounting for nearly five per
cent of the total industry workforce.
3. In 2006, Rolls-Royce was awarded the Distinguished Partner in Progress
(DPIP) Award by the Economic Development Board (EDB) of Singapore in
recognition of its contributions to Singapore in the economic, social and
community areas.
4. In January 2006, Rolls-Royce opened a regional procurement headquarters in
Singapore to handle the management of suppliers in South Korea, Taiwan,
Malaysia, India and Singapore, following considerable growth in operations
around the region. It also manages its regional energy business from
Singapore and the marine business has a regional headquarters in the
country.
5. Rolls-Royce has also been active in research and development activities in
Singapore, through investments in setting up Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems
and the Rolls-Royce Singapore Advanced Technology Centre with Singapore's
Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) to look into a broad
portfolio of technologies.
