Virginia Traffic Management Contract
Serco awarded Virginia traffic management contract
16 May 2013
Serco Group plc (Serco), the international service company, announces today the
award of a new contract to integrate and operate Virginia Department of
Transportation's (VDOT) transportation operation centres, manage the Safety
Service Patrol, and develop and implement a state-wide advanced traffic
management system. The contract has a six-year base period valued at $355m and
three two-year option periods. Work is expected to begin during the third
quarter of 2013.
Following yesterday's approval by the Commonwealth Transportation Board,
Commissioner Gregory Whirley signed the Transportation Operations Center and
State-wide Advanced Traffic Management Systems contract. Under this contract
Serco will support VDOT as it moves from its existing traffic management
systems to a single advanced, real-time, state-wide solution that oversees
57,000 miles of roadway. Serco will: develop and deploy the software solution;
manage control room operations at five centres; install and maintain
Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment; manage incident and
emergency responses; dispatch safety patrol and maintenance crews to respond to
incidents; manage High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) and reversible lanes; provide
real-time information to emergency responders; and coordinate signal systems.
Serco has provided traffic management services around the world, including
active traffic management and intelligent transportation systems in the UK, and
traffic/tunnel controls in Hong Kong. The Company also supports Georgia's
Department of Transportation intelligent transportation systems and parking and
enforcement services throughout the country.
Christopher Hyman, Chief Executive of Serco Group plc, said: "We are delighted
to be awarded this opportunity to help advance Virginia's traffic management
system. We look forward to supporting VDOT as it implements a new system that
leverages technology to achieve operations that are more efficient, and one
that improves mobility and safety throughout Virginia. This also marks
excellent progress in our strategy to further diversify Serco's Americas
portfolio, building on the skills and capabilities that we deliver in other
parts of the Group around the world."
