                            APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR                            

Spectris plc, the precision instrumentation and controls company, is pleased to
announce the appointment of Stephen Harris as Business Group Director on 2nd 
June, 2003.

Stephen Harris joins Spectris plc from Powell Duffryn where he was Executive
Director responsible for a number of subsidiaries.  Previously, he held several
positions within APV, culminating with his appointment as President of their
North American operations and being domiciled in the US for a significant
period of time. He has a degree in engineering from Cambridge and an MBA from
the University of Chicago.

The Company confirms that Mr Harris was previously a director of Powell Duffryn
plc and that there is no other information which requires disclosure pursuant
to Rule 16.4 of the Listing Rules.
