Spectris plc ('the Company') was today notified that on 30 March 2004 John     
William Poulter exercised an option over 30,778 shares (0.025% of the issued   
share capital) at a price of 388.9081 pence each.   All the shares were sold at
a price of 475 pence each.                                                     
                                                                               
Following this notification, Mr Poulter retains a beneficial holding in the    
Company of 142,687 ordinary shares of 5 pence each (0.115% of the issued share
