Zurich, Switzerland, July 21, 2004 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has won a contract worth $96 million from Polish investor Europol Gaz and pipeline contractor Bartimpex to construct a fifth compressor station along the Yamal-Europe natural gas pipeline. ABB will build the turnkey compressor station incorporating three 25 MW turbo compressor units near the Polish city of Zambrow. The project scope also includes ABB products for control, automation, and electro-technical systems, plus full project management services including design, procurement, systems assembly and commissioning. 'We are pleased to play a continuing role in the development of this important energy link,' said Dinesh Paliwal, head of ABB's Automation Technologies division. 'Blending ABB automation technologies with our expertise in oil and gas processes, we are helping to bring new capacity and reliability to the Yamal-Europe pipeline.' This latest contract follows a $190 million award to ABB in early 2004 for construction of two compressor stations near the cities of Szamotuly and Ciechanow. The Zambrow station, set for start-up at the end of 2005, will complete the Polish pipeline section, helping to boost annual capacity from its current 20 billion cubic meters (BCM) to nearly 33 BCM. The Yamal-Europe transit pipeline spans some 4,000 kilometers, connecting rich natural gas deposits on Russia's Yamal Peninsula with Western Europe.
