ABB wins US$ 300-million in Brazilian power transmission contracts
Technology group to build 1,300 kilometers in powerline; couples innovation with
local expertise
Zurich, Switzerland, June 13, 2001 - Global technology group ABB said today it
has won contracts worth about US$ 300-million to design and build two
high-voltage power transmission systems with a combined length of nearly
1,300-kilometers to help satisfy the steadily increasing demand for energy in
Brazil.
The order stems from a concession agreement granted by the Federal National
Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) of Brazil to a consortium of power developers.
The concession gives the developer consortium Schahin/Alusa the right to build,
own and operate two power lines in north and northeastern Brazil to increase the
transmission capacity of the national power grid.
'Upgrading and extending the network will significantly improve Brazil's power
reliability,' said Richard Siudek, executive vice president and head of ABB'S
Utilities division, 'We will use our experience with interconnections in Brazil
to rapidly implement this important project.'
ABB will design, procure and construct all transmission line components,
including six 500 kilovolt substations and reactive power compensation
equipment. Many of the projects' components will be manufactured at ABB plants
in Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais.
ABB (www.abb.com) serves manufacturing, process and consumer industries,
utilities, the oil and gas markets, with 160,000 employees in more than 100
countries.
