ABB wins power contracts worth US$ 44 million in Nigeria
Projects will expand and improve existing power infrastructure
Zurich, Switzerland, April 18, 2002 - ABB, the global power and automation
company, announced today it has won contracts worth US$44 million from
Nigeria's state-owned National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), for two
transmission and distribution projects to upgrade the country's electrical
supply infrastructure.
'This work is critical to the continued development of Nigeria's power sector,
and will improve the overall capacity, efficiency, and reliability of the
country's electrical transmission and distribution system,' said Richard Siudek,
executive vice president and head of ABBs Utilities division. 'ABB is a major
supplier and contractor to NEPA, and has the skills and local know-how needed
for efficient delivery of such diverse and challenging projects.'
In a major, two-year project worth US$34 million, ABB will design and build a
132-kilometer, 330-kilovolt transmission line connecting the cities of Benin and
Onitsha in Southern Nigeria. The contract includes a 2.5-kilometer overhead
transmission line across the Niger River, and installation of composite fiber
optic cable throughout the line to strengthen the country's telecommunications
and data communications capabilities. The project is scheduled for completion by
the second quarter of 2003.
A second project is the US$-10 million, fast-track refurbishment of ninety-two
330-kilovolt and 132-kilovolt circuit breakers at seven different transmission
and distribution substations throughout Nigeria. In addition to supplying spare
parts plus a range of high-voltage; components, ABB will provide technical
training for NEPA engineers. The project is scheduled for completion by August
2002.
The upgrades are part of the Nigerian governments plan to support the country's
economic development. The projects include rehabilitation and expansion of the
transmission and distribution system.
