ABB wins US$ 27 million order to boost energy supply in Sri Lanka
High-tech systems will extend power distribution infrastructure
Zurich, Switzerland, December 02, 2003 - ABB, the leading power and automation
technology group, said today it has won a turnkey contract worth US$ 27 million
to strengthen energy supplies in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, and its
industrial outskirts.
It is the largest power transmission order won by ABB in Sri Lanka.
'The order highlights the importance for ABB of the South Asian market, where
there is increasing demand for our high-end technology to strengthen the power
distribution infrastructure,' said Peter Smits, head of ABB's Power Technologies
division. 'We have recently opened more liaison offices, including one in Sri
Lanka, to help meet business demand.'
Under the contract with the Ceylon Electricity Board, ABB will install four
substations based on gas insulated technology (GIS) over the next two years.
The customer chose compact GIS technology because space in Colombo is at a
premium, ABB said.
The project involves the design, manufacture, testing, erection and
commissioning of the switchgear, new transformers and associated equipment. ABB
will supply 132kV GIS units, 33kV and 11kV GIS units, power transformers, and
control and protection panels, including substation automation systems.
ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable
utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering their
environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100
countries and employs about 120,000 people.
