ABB wins US$ 21 million contracts to boost copper production in Chile
Automation solutions include world's largest copper mill motor
Zurich, Switzerland, January 30, 2004 - ABB, the leading power and automation
technology group, said today it has won two automation contracts worth a total
of US$ 21 million to help boost production for the Chilean company Collahausi,
the world's fourth largest copper producer.
The equipment will be installed at the Ujina and Rosario mines, some 4,400
meters above sea level in the Andes mountains, close to the border with Bolivia.
ABB will supply electrical and control products and systems, including the
world's largest mill motor used in copper production - a 40-foot stator unit
with gearless mill drive technology - plus a wide range of process control
solutions.
'These contracts reinforce our track record in providing integrated power and
automation solutions for the metals and mining industries,' said Dinesh Paliwal,
head of ABB's Automation Technologies division. 'We are grateful to Collahausi
for their long-standing confidence, based on successful cooperation on previous
projects.'
The new Collahausi projects represent the largest mining operation to be
operated by ABB's Industrial IT system - the group's patented concept for
linking control system functions with the information needed to install, operate
and maintain plant devices.
Some of the ABB equipment was delivered last September and is due to be tested
early this year. Installation and commissioning work is expected to be completed
by July 2004. As part of the contract, ABB personnel will also train Collahausi
operators on the new systems.
The current projects continue a series of contracts with Collahausi dating back
six years. ABB first installed and commissioned electrical and control equipment
for the company in 1997.
