ABB lands $40 million automation project in China
Control, drive, power systems to support world's largest paper machine
Zurich, Switzerland, June 9, 2004 - ABB, the leading power and automation
technology group, said today it has won a contract worth more than $40 million
to deliver process automation, drives, quality control systems, electrification
and related services to Asia Pulp and Paper Co. Ltd. in China.
ABB's technology will support the installation of a new fine paper machine at
the JiangSu Gold East mill in Dagang, about 200 kilometers west of Shanghai,
where ABB was a major supplier during construction of the new mill in 1999. The
new paper machine, with a planned capacity of 2,970 tons per day, will be the
world's largest in installed power at 120 Megawatts. The machine is scheduled
for start-up in March 2005.
'We are delighted that our long cooperation with Asia Pulp and Paper has been
extended to this expansion,' said Dinesh Paliwal, head of ABB Automation
Technologies division. 'Working together, we have applied our combined expertise
in paper making and automation to create one of the largest and most advanced
production facilities for fine paper in China.'
The integrated automation solution incorporates new technologies like ABB's
Industrial IT System 800xA for extended automation, and new ACS 800 industrial
drives to optimize operation and control of the paper machine. A quality control
system including six scanning platforms will provide fast, accurate measurements
of the paper as it is produced.
For power distribution and process electrification, ABB will supply new 110 kV
and 35 kV gas-insulated switchgear, 6 kV motor control switchgear, as well as a
network control system, power and distribution transformers, intelligent 400 V
motor control centers, high voltage and low voltage motors, single drives and
installation material. ABB's contract scope also includes project execution
services.
