ABB Ltd 09 June 2004 ABB lands $40 million automation project in China Control, drive, power systems to support world's largest paper machine Zurich, Switzerland, June 9, 2004 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has won a contract worth more than $40 million to deliver process automation, drives, quality control systems, electrification and related services to Asia Pulp and Paper Co. Ltd. in China. ABB's technology will support the installation of a new fine paper machine at the JiangSu Gold East mill in Dagang, about 200 kilometers west of Shanghai, where ABB was a major supplier during construction of the new mill in 1999. The new paper machine, with a planned capacity of 2,970 tons per day, will be the world's largest in installed power at 120 Megawatts. The machine is scheduled for start-up in March 2005. 'We are delighted that our long cooperation with Asia Pulp and Paper has been extended to this expansion,' said Dinesh Paliwal, head of ABB Automation Technologies division. 'Working together, we have applied our combined expertise in paper making and automation to create one of the largest and most advanced production facilities for fine paper in China.' The integrated automation solution incorporates new technologies like ABB's Industrial IT System 800xA for extended automation, and new ACS 800 industrial drives to optimize operation and control of the paper machine. A quality control system including six scanning platforms will provide fast, accurate measurements of the paper as it is produced. For power distribution and process electrification, ABB will supply new 110 kV and 35 kV gas-insulated switchgear, 6 kV motor control switchgear, as well as a network control system, power and distribution transformers, intelligent 400 V motor control centers, high voltage and low voltage motors, single drives and installation material. ABB's contract scope also includes project execution services.
