Board Changes

Standard Life plc ('the Company') announces with regret that, for health reasons, John Paynter has decided to retire from the Board of the Company and from the Board of Standard Life Investments (Holdings) Limited ('Standard Life Investments') with immediate effect.  John has been a non-executive Director of the Company since 1 January 2012 and during that time he has served as the Senior Independent Director and a member of the Audit, Remuneration and Nomination and Governance Committees.  He has also served as non-executive Chairman of Standard Life Investments since 1 January 2012, having been appointed non-executive Director on 1 December 2010.  As a result, John will not stand for re-election at the forthcoming Annual General Meeting, and the resolution proposing his re-election will be withdrawn at the meeting.

Commenting on John's retirement, Sir Gerry Grimstone, Chairman, said:

"On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank John Paynter for his excellent service and commitment to Standard Life during a period of great change and development.  John has been a deeply-valued and special colleague and our thoughts are with him and his family."

The Company also announces that Crawford Gillies will be appointed to the position of Senior Independent Director ('SID') with immediate effect.  It is intended that he will serve as SID until the 2016 Annual General Meeting when he will retire from the Board, having concluded nine years' service.

John Devine, currently a non-executive Director of Standard Life Investments, will be appointed non-executive Chairman with immediate effect.

John Devine

John Devine has served as a non-executive Director of Standard Life Investments since 25 September 2012.  He is also non-executive Director of Citco Custody Limited and Euroclear PLC. 

John was previously Global Chief Operating Officer of Threadneedle Investments.  Prior to joining Threadneedle, John held a number of senior positions at Merrill Lynch, including Senior Vice President and Head of Global Operations & Technology, Managing Director, First Vice President and Global Chief Financial Officer, Global Markets and Investment Banking in New York and Chief Financial Officer, International in London.
