Further to the announcement made on 9 September 2009, Standard Life plc ("Standard Life") announces that in its discussions with Bank of China Limited ("BOC") and Tianjin TEDA International Holding (Group) Co. Limited ("TEDA") regarding the proposed acquisition of a majority stake in Heng An Standard Life Insurance Company Limited ("Heng An Standard Life")* by BOC, it has not proved possible for the parties to reach agreement.

Standard Life will continue to develop Heng An Standard Life in partnership with its existing joint venture partner, TEDA.

*Heng An Standard Life is a 50/50 joint venture between Standard Life and TEDA.
