The Board of Aberdeen Asian Smaller Companies PLC (the 'Company') announces
that, with effect from 22 May 2001, Ms Radhika Ajmera has been appointed as
non executive alternate director for Mr Martin Gilbert.

In accordance with the requirements of paragraph 16.4 of the Listing Rules of
The London Stock Exchange (the 'Listing Rules'):

Mrs Ajmera is currently a Director of the following publicly quoted companies:
Aberdeen Emerging Economies Investment Trust PLC (alternate)
Aberdeen Latin American Investment Trust PLC

There are no disclosures required to be made by Ms Ajmera under paragraph
6.F.2(B) to (G) of the Listing Rules.
