Appointment of a New Director

Standard Life Equity Income Trust PLC is pleased to announce the appointment of
Mr Richard Burns as an independent non-executive director of the Company with
effect from today, 23 May 2006.

Mr Burns was formerly Joint Senior Partner of Baillie Gifford. He is currently a
non-executive director of The Bankers Investment Trust PLC, EP Global
Opportunities Trust PLC and Mid Wynd International Investment Trust PLC and a
former non-executive director of The Baillie Gifford Japan Trust PLC.

Mr Burns currently has a beneficial interest in 20,000 Ordinary shares of the
Company.

The Board of Standard Life Equity Income Trust PLC is pleased that Mr Burns has
agreed to join the Board and looks forward to his contribution to the future
success of the Company.

There are no other disclosures required under Section 9.6.13 (1) to (6) of the
Listing Rules.
