AFC Energy loans assets to Lancaster University

Key equipment moved to initiate technical development for industrial applications

AFC Energy (AIM: AFC), the industrial fuel cell power company, is pleased to announce that it has made the first delivery of equipment to the engineering department at Lancaster University to facilitate their new alkaline fuel cell research and development programme.

In January 2013, AFC Energy and Lancaster, a highly ranked research intensive university, previously announced their intention to undertake research and testing together to better understand how alkaline fuel cells operate using an array of different hydrogen feed-stocks.

This initial equipment loaned to the university comprises state-of-the-art material processing and catalyst characterisation equipment. Fundamental research that will be undertaken using this equipment will help AFC to exploit its world-leading technology.

Dr Gene Lewis, Technical Director, said: "This is the first step to creating a strong technical partnership with Lancaster University. A principle philosophy at AFC is to add significant value to materials using industry accepted high volume/low cost production processes. The equipment we have loaned to Lancaster will enable them to work in tandem with the team at AFC and further develop these materials/processes to maximise the potential of our proprietary technology. AFC has a long standing and excellent relationship with members of Lancaster's engineering department and we are excited about taking this relationship to the next level."

Dr Richard Dawson commented: "Bringing state of the art equipment and expertise to the University to support our new activities in fuel cell research is a significant part of our relationship with AFC Energy. This is a great opportunity for our students and researchers to work with equipment which is employed within a cutting edge industry."

About AFC Energy

Founded in 2006, AFC Energy plc is re-engineering proven alkaline fuel cell technology to reduce the cost of electricity. Alkaline fuel cells have been used on US and Russian manned space missions for decades to provide electrical power and drinking water. By using modern materials, design tools and manufacturing processes at scale, AFC Energy is developing fuel cells that will compete with conventional technologies such as turbines for electrical power generation. Today, AFC Energy is pursuing opportunities in several sectors where hydrogen is readily available including the chlorine, clean coal and waste-to-energy industries as well as applications for distributed/back-up power.
