White Nile Limited ('White Nile' or 'the Company')
White Nile Ltd, the AIM listed oil and gas exploration company, announces that
it has been informed that Dr John Garang, the First Vice President of the
Republic of Sudan and the President of the Government of South Sudan, has died
in an air crash on his return from an official visit to Uganda. The Company is
extremely saddened by the news and offers its condolences to Dr Garang's family
and the people of Sudan.
White Nile has been in contact with its major shareholder Nile Petroleum
Corporation and representatives of the South Sudanese Government. It has been
informed that the new constitution will continue to be implemented and that the
death of Dr Garang will not affect the planned development of the country under
the terms of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement ('CPA') signed at the beginning
of the year.
White Nile Chairman Phil Edmonds said: 'We are all extremely saddened to hear
this news and we offer the utmost sympathy to the people of South Sudan and in
particular Dr John's family. We will continue to work closely with our partners
in South Sudan and will provide the people with all the support we can in order
for them to continue to develop their oil industry and infrastructure. We are
receiving a very strong message from Sudan that although this is extremely sad
news for the country, going forward it will be business as usual and that the
implementation of the CPA will continue according to plan.'
