Alkane Energy plc ('Alkane' or 'the company')

Notification of Major Interests in Shares

We hereby give notice pursuant to Rule 9.11 of the Listing Rules, that on 22
August 2001 Alkane received notification in accordance with Section 198 of the
Companies Act 1985, that through a technical adjustment on 22 August 2001,
Energy (CG) Limited transferred 693,501 ordinary shares representing 0.77% of
their holding in the Company.

Following this transaction their remaining holding is 3,464,899 ordinary
shares, representing approximately 3.87 % of the Company's issued share
capital.

The shares are registered in the name of Energy (CG) Limited at Jubilee
Building, Victoria Street, Douglas Isle of Man.
