Notification of Major Interests in Shares

We hereby give notice pursuant to Rule 9.11 of the Listing Rules, that on 28
June 2001 Alkane Energy plc ('the Company'), received notification in
accordance with Section 198 of the Companies Act 1985 that Apax Partners & Co
Ventures Limited (as funds managers of their partnerships, APAX UK V-A, LP and
APAX UK V-B) sold 2,500,000 ordinary shares on 25 June 2001, representing 6.9%
of their holding.

Following this transaction their remaining holding is 33,626,000 ordinary
shares, representing approximately 37.5% of the Company's issued share
capital.

The shares are registered in the name of Apax Fund Nominees Limited D Account
at National Westminster Bank Plc, Ground Floor, 15 Bishopsgate, London EC2P
2AP.
