Alliance Trust PLC : Chairman Appointment

APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRMAN

Alliance Trust PLC is delighted to announce the appointment of Karin Forseke as
non-executive Chairman to succeed Lesley Knox.  Karin will join the Board of the
Company on 1 March 2012 and will become Chairman on Monday 2 April 2012.

Karin Forseke currently holds a number of non-executive directorships including
Deputy Chairman and Senior Independent Director of the Financial Services
Authority and a non-executive director of Wallenius Lines AB. Among her previous
appointments, Karin was Chief Executive Officer of D Carnegie & Co AB from 2003
to 2006 and Chief Operating Officer of the London International Financial
Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE) from 1996 to 1998, having joined the
Exchange in 1993.

Lesley Knox will retire from the Board on 2 April following a handover period of
approximately one month.  This follows the announcement by the Company on 20 May
2011 that she would retire as Chairman before the next AGM, which will be held
in Dundee on 27 April 2012.

Commenting on the appointment, Lesley Knox said "I am delighted to welcome Karin
Forseke as the next Chairman of Alliance Trust.  She has extensive experience of
financial services and this, alongside her international perspective, will be
invaluable as we continue to invest across the globe in order to seek value for
our shareholders."

Karin Forseke has previously been a director of the following publicly-quoted
companies:
  * D Carnegie & Co AB (until 2006)
  * Eniro AB (until April 2011)

There are no other matters requiring to be disclosed pursuant to Listing Rule
9.6.13.
