Director Appointment

Further to the announcement made on 5 September 2005, The Alliance Trust PLC
announces the reappointment of Ms. Clare Leslie Salmon as a director with effect
from today, Wednesday, 14 September 2005.

Clare  Salmon  has  a strong background in financial services and  was  Managing
Director of Financial Services at AA before joining ITV as Marketing Director in
2004.   Having  started  her  career as a strategic management  consultant,  Ms.
Salmon  has  also worked as Consumer Marketing Director for the  Prudential  and
Group Marketing Director for Avis Europe.

Other  directorships:   Ms. Salmon is a non-executive  director  of  The  Second
Alliance Trust PLC.

On  appointment,  Ms. Salmon's shareholding in The Alliance Trust  PLC  was  200
ordinary shares of 25p.
