The Board of The Alliance Trust PLC announces the following appointment.

Ms Clare Salmon joins the Board as a non-executive director with immediate
effect.

Ms Salmon's appointment falls to be approved by the stockholders at the next
Annual General Meeting of the Company.

The Alliance Trusts appoint new Non-executive Director

The  Alliance  Trust  PLC and The Second Alliance Trust  PLC,  two  self-managed
investment  companies,  today  (Friday) have each appointed  Clare  Salmon,  the
Marketing  Director of commercial television network ITV, to their Boards  as  a
Non-Executive Director.

The  Alliance Trusts are listed investment trust companies based in Dundee which
share management and administration resources.  In aggregate they have assets of
more than £2bn.

Clare  Salmon  has  a strong background in financial services and  was  Managing
Director of Financial Services at AA before joining ITV as Marketing Director in
2004.  Having started her career as a strategic management consultant, Clare has
also worked for the Prudential and Avis Europe.

Alliance  Trusts' Chairman Lesley Knox said, "Clare brings to  our  boards  wide
experience  in  financial  services, marketing and communications  and  we  look
forward  to her contribution to the continuing development of the companies  and
their jointly owned financial services company Alliance Trust Savings."

  companies that are separately listed on the London Stock Exchange. Between them
  they have a net asset value of more than £2bn (as at May 31, 2005). The Alliance
