Alliance Trust PLC : Directorate change

APPOINTMENT OF NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Alliance Trust PLC is pleased to announce the appointment of Consuelo Brooke as
a non-executive director of the Company with immediate effect.

Consuelo Brooke joined S.G. Warburg's Investment Department in 1969 and was with
the firm (later Mercury Asset Management and Merrill Lynch Investment Managers)
until her retirement as a Managing Director in 2001. She subsequently
established her own firm, C Brooke Investment Managers Ltd, from which she
retired in 2010. Consuelo Brooke has previously held non-executive directorships
at BTG plc and Xansa plc. She is currently an Independent Member of the Council
of Sussex University (of which she was Treasurer from 2002 until July, 2011) and
is a Trustee of Sussex Community Foundation.

Consuelo Brooke will replace Hugh Bolland, who has indicated that he wishes to
retire from the Board at the Company's next AGM in April 2012.

Mrs Lesley Knox, Chairman, said:

the Board of Alliance Trust and his guidance during the creation of our asset
management subsidiary. Consuelo Brooke's extensive experience in investment
management will ensure that we continue to focus on improving investment
performance within the Trust."

The search for a successor to the current Chairman, who has indicated that she
will stand down before the next AGM, is making good progress and an announcement
will be made in due course.

In the past five years Consuelo Brooke has been a director of the following
publicly-quoted companies:
  * Xansa plc (retired 2007)
  * BTG plc (retired 2008)

There are no matters requiring to be disclosed pursuant to Listing Rule 9.6.13
(2) to (6).
