Anglo American PLC 27 September 2001 News Release Embargoed until 08.00 hours Thursday 27th September 27th September 2001 ANGLO AMERICAN PLC NAMES NEXT CHAIRMAN Anglo American plc announces that Goran Lindahl will join its Board today as Deputy Chairman, succeeding Sir David Scholey who will continue as the Company's senior Non-Executive Director. The Board proposes to elect Goran Lindahl as its Chairman upon the retirement of Julian Ogilvie Thompson after the AGM in May 2002. Mr Lindahl is a Non-Executive Director of the following listed companies: DuPont, Ericsson, Ratos and Sony. He is a member of the International Advisory Board of Salomon Smith Barney. He is a Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General and Chairman of the Alliance for Global Sustainability. He served as a member of the World Commission on Dams. Mr Lindahl is based in London and his role with Anglo American will be Non-Executive. Goran Lindahl, 56, was President and Chief Executive Officer of ABB, the global power and automation technology group, from 1997 until the end of 2000. He has extensive international experience having had responsibility for Africa, Latin America, Asia and Central and Eastern Europe. An engineer by training, he joined ABB (ASEA) in 1971. He has held positions in R and D, manufacturing, design, sales and marketing and has a strong track record in large-scale, project management based, infrastructure businesses.
