Sir Mark Moody-Stuart becomes Chairman of Anglo American plc
Julian Ogilvie Thompson retires
On 30 November, Sir Mark Moody-Stuart succeeded Julian Ogilvie Thompson as Non
Executive Chairman of Anglo American plc. Sir Mark also sits on the Safety,
Health and Environment and Nominations Committees of the Board.
Sir Mark, 61, is a director of The "Shell" Transport and Trading Company plc, of
HSBC Holdings plc and of Accenture Ltd. He was Chairman of the Committee of
Managing Directors of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of companies from 1998 to
2001, having been appointed a managing director in 1991.
Sir Mark is a member of the UN Secretary General's Advisory Council for the
Global Compact, an initiative which promotes business action in support of human
and labour rights and the environment. He was co-Chair of the G8 Task Force on
Renewable Energy in 2000 and 2001 and was chairman of Business Action for
Sustainable Development, a joint initiative of the International Chamber of
Commerce and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, set up to
ensure that business was able to make a positive contribution to the UN World
Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg earlier this year.
Julian Ogilvie Thompson retires after 46 years with the Anglo American group,
the last 12 years as Chairman. Mr Ogilvie Thompson took the decision to retire
having achieved the objectives of listing Anglo American plc on the London Stock
Exchange in 1999 and establishing it as one of the world's leading global mining
and natural resource companies.
Julian Ogilvie Thompson commented: "I have found my years with Anglo American
stimulating and great fun and I am retiring confident in the future of the
company. Anglo American has a strong and well balanced board which I know Mark
Moody-Stuart will lead with distinction. In Tony Trahar, Anglo American has a
Chief Executive who is achieving great things both internally and externally.
He is backed by a sound management team with a deep sense of loyalty to the
company. These attributes, together with the commodity and geographic diversity
of our assets, the strength of our balance sheet and the company's commitment to
the welfare of the communities in which we operate should ensure success. "
Sir Mark Moody-Stuart commented "Anglo American has undergone a remarkable
transformation in recent years as it has become a truly global player. Julian
Ogilvie Thompson has been one of the key architects of this journey. He is a man
of vision and a true leader. I am honoured to succeed him."
