NOTIFICATION OF INTERESTS OF DIRECTORS AND CONNECTED PERSONS


Please note that we have been advised on September 8, 1999, that:

The interest of the Combined Retirement Annuity Fund is 15,400 ordinary shares
in the Company and not 20,400 as previously disclosed in relation to the
interests of Mr J Ogilvie Thompson on June 28, 1999 (as amended on June 29,
1999) and as also disclosed in the prospectus (the 'Prospectus') issued by the
Company on April 22, 1999.

The original disclosures relating to the aforesaid 20,400 ordinary shares were
in respect of 15,400 ordinary shares arising from the exchange of the same
number of ordinary shares in Anglo American Corporation of South Africa London
('AAC') for ordinary shares in the Company in accordance with the AAC scheme
of arrangement disclosed in the Prospectus and 5,000 ordinary shares of the
Company arising from a holding of 10,000 ordinary shares in Minorco which, it
was believed at the time, would be tendered into the offer by the Company for
Minorco.  In the event, the 10,000 Minorco ordinary shares were sold in the
market on April 22, 1999, and consequently only the 15,400 ordinary shares in
AAC were exchanged for 15,400 ordinary shares in the Company.

Accordingly, Mr J Ogilvie Thompson's interest in the ordinary shares of the
Company are as follows:

(1) 31,423 ordinary shares

(2) 152,777 options
