     NOTIFICATION CONCERNING INTEREST IN SHARES IN ANGLO AMERICAN plc

   On May 25, 2001 Anglo American plc (the 'Company') was notified of the       
   following:

>  On May 21, 2001,  Central Holdings Limited ('CHL') transferred 11,762,076
   ordinary shares in the Company ('Shares') in which each of the Interested    
   Parties referred to below had a notifiable interest under Part VI of the     
   Companies Act 1985 (a  'Notifiable  interest') to De Beers Investments       
   (Proprietary)  Limited ('DBP') as nominee for CHL.

>  On May 21, 2001, Centhold Limited ('Centhold') transferred 48,774,596 Shares
   in which each of the Interested Parties referred to below had a Notifiable   
   Interest to DBP as nominee for Centhold.

>  On May 25, 2001, CHL sold 8,000,000 Shares previously registered in its name.
   Prior to completion of the sale of these Shares (the 'Sale'), the following  
   parties  had  a notifiable interest, within the meaning of Sections          
   199(2),  203 and 208 of the Companies Act 1985 in 117,031,040 Shares:

>  Bastion Holdings Limited
>  Capricorn Trustees Limited 
>  Central Holdings Limited
>  Central Holdings International Limited 
>  Pradine Limited 
>  Spectre Limited 
>  Dr K-H. Ritter, Maitland Trustees and C. Andina as trustees of the Achilles
   Trust 
   - all herein referred to as the 'Interested Parties'

> Following completion of the Sale, the Interested Parties' Notifiable Interest
  in the Company has reduced to 109,031,040 Shares, representing 6.69% of the
  Company's current issued capital. Mr N.F. Oppenheimer and Mr J. Ogilvie
  Thompson have interests in discretionary trusts that have an indirect economic
  interest in 84.51% and 4.59% respectively of the Shares in which the
  Interested Parties have an interest.

> Mr N.F. Oppenheimer and Mr J. Ogilvie Thompson have ceased to have an interest
  in the Shares that were the subject of the sale because that interest arose
  as a result of their interests in family discretionary trusts which are
  treated under the Companies Act 1985 as being interested in Shares in which
  Central Holdings Limited has an interest.

Please note that further announcements in relation to the interests of Central
Holdings Limited in the Company will be made over the next two weeks as a result
of the completion of the De Beers Transaction which was announced on 15
February, 2001.
