NOTIFICATION CONCERNING INTERESTS IN ORDINARY SHARES OF US$0.50 EACH IN THE
CAPITAL OF ANGLO AMERICAN PLC ('ORDINARY SHARES')

Notifications pursuant to sections 198(1) and 202(4) of the Companies Act 1985

We received yesterday a notice given on behalf of the following entities
pursuant to the provisions of sections 198(1) and 202(4) of the Companies Act
1985 in relation to transactions which completed on 23 May 2001, 25 May 2001
and 28 May 2001 ('the Transactions'). The entities concerned are:-


        *      Bastion Holdings Limited ('Bastion')

        *      Capricorn Trustees Limited ('Capricorn')

        *      Central Holdings International Limited ('CHIL')

        *      Central Holdings Limited SA ('CH')

        *      Central Investments DBI ('CIDBI')

        *      CHL Investments ('CHLISA')

        *      DB Investments ('DB Investments')

        *      De Beers Investments (Proprietary) Limited ('DBIPL')

        *      Dr K-H Ritter, Maitland Trustees Limited and C Andina ('the
               Trustees')

        *      Felton Holdings Limited ('Felton')

        *      Pradine Limited ('Pradine')

        *      Spectre Limited ('Spectre')

The notice states that as a result of the Transactions:-


 1. On 23 May 2001, CIDBI, a subsidiary of CH, acquired a notifiable interest
    in 60,536,672 Ordinary Shares, all of which were registered in the name of
    DBIPL before and after the relevant Transaction.

 2. On 23 May 2001, CHLISA acquired a notifiable interest in 100,132,636
    Ordinary Shares of which 39,595,964 were registered in the name of CH and
    60,536,672 were registered in the name of DBIPL in each case before and
    after the relevant Transaction.

 3. On 25 May 2001, as previously notified, 8,000,000 Ordinary Shares
    previously registered in the name of CH ceased to be registered in the
    name of CH and CH, Capricorn, CHIL, Spectre, Pradine, Bastion and the
    Trustees ceased to have an interest in those Ordinary Shares.

 4. On 28 May 2001, DB Investments, then a subsidiary of CH, acquired a
    notifiable interest in 55,615,336 Ordinary Shares, all of which were
    registered in the name of DBIPL, and Bastion, Capricorn, CH, CHIL,
    Pradine, Spectre and the Trustees acquired an interest in the said
    55,615,336 Ordinary Shares resulting in each of them having a notifiable
    interest in a total of 164,646,376 Ordinary Shares.

 5. On 28 May 2001, DB Investments acquired an interest in 48,774,596 Ordinary
    Shares, all of which were registered in the name of DBIPL, resulting in DB
    Investments having a notifiable interest in a total of 104,389,932
    Ordinary Shares and CHLISA and CIDBI ceased to be interested in the said
    48,774,596 Ordinary Shares. As a result, CIDBI ceased to have a notifiable
    interest and CHLISA's notifiable interest reduced to a notifiable interest
    in 51,358,040 Ordinary Shares.

 6. On 28 May 2001, DB Investments acquired an interest in 11,762,076 Ordinary
    Shares, the registered owner of those ordinary shares being DBIPL, and its
    notifiable interest became an interest in a total of 116,152,008 Ordinary
    Shares, CHLISA ceased to have a notifiable interest as a result of the
    same Transaction.

 7. The Company and the following subsidiaries have a notifiable interest in
    the Ordinary Shares in which DB Investments is interested:


  * Anglo American Holdings Limited

  * Anglo American International SA

  * Anglo American Luxembourg SA

  * Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Limited

  * Anglo South Africa (Pty) Limited

  * Anglo South African Capital (Pty) Limited

Notification of a change to interest pursuant to section 324(2) of the
Companies Act 1985

We received yesterday a notice given on behalf of Nicholas F Oppenheimer
pursuant to section 324(2) of the Companies Act 1985 in relation to him
becoming interested in an additional 55,615,336 Ordinary Shares and thereby
becoming interested in a total of 164,646,376 Ordinary Shares.

Voluntary notification of a change in interest

We received yesterday a voluntary notification given on behalf of Julian
Ogilvie Thompson. Previously, he had given notice to the Company voluntarily
of an interest in a discretionary family trust which owns an indirect economic
interest in 4.59 per cent of the Ordinary Shares in which CH has an interest.
As a result of the Transactions, CH became interested in an additional
55,615,336 Ordinary Shares.

Julian Ogilvie Thompson's interest in the Ordinary Shares in which CH has an
interest is not an interest of which he is obliged to give notice to Anglo
American plc.

Further Notifications

As explained in our notification of 29 May 2001, further announcements will be
made in the near future as a result of the completion of the De Beers
Transaction which was announced on 15 February 2001.
