Anglo American appoints Paulo Castellari as CEO of Iron Ore Brazil

Anglo American announces the appointment of Paulo Castellari as CEO of its Iron Ore Brazil business from 1 January 2012. Paulo Castellari is currently the Commercial Director of Iron Ore Brazil, with responsibility for strategy, business development, sales and marketing and supply chain. Before joining Iron Ore Brazil in May 2011, Paulo served as CEO of Anglo American's Phosphates and Niobium businesses, also based in Brazil.

Paulo Castellari replaces Stephan Weber, who has led the Minas-Rio iron ore project through a period of significant regulatory and development progress and driven the operational turnaround of the Amapá operation, and who has now decided to explore other opportunities.

Cynthia Carroll, Chief Executive of Anglo American, said: "I would like to thank Stephan Weber sincerely for his tremendous contribution to our Iron Ore Brazil business. Under his leadership, we have achieved significant progress with the Minas-Rio project and the operational turnaround of Amapá. He will leave with our best wishes for the future. I am very pleased to welcome Paulo Castellari as Stephan's successor as CEO of Iron Ore Brazil at a time when we have moved into the civil construction and installation phase of our world class Minas-Rio project. Paulo's extensive experience in complex project management and performance will be invaluable as we proceed towards the delivery of Minas-Rio - one of the world's largest mining projects."

Stephan Weber said, "I am very proud of what the Iron Ore Brazil team has achieved during my time as CEO. Now is the right time for me to move on to new opportunities as the project progresses to a different phase. I wish the team every success for the future."

Paulo Castellari said: "I look forward to taking up the leadership of our Brazilian iron ore interests. The Minas-Rio project is an enormously exciting prospect in many ways - from its scale, dedicated logistics system, the high quality and purity of its product, to its highly competitive cost position and the very significant potential for further expansion from our 5.3 billion tonne resource base. While we still have much work to do in terms of construction and a number of other permits to secure, we are entirely focused on the successful delivery of the project."

Under Stephan Weber's leadership, the Minas-Rio project has secured a number of its major licences and permits, including the mining permit, the two critical installation licences for the mine, beneficiation plant and tailings dam and the Mineral Easement for land access for the 525km slurry pipeline, in addition to securing a fixed and highly competitive 25-year port tariff agreement for the iron ore export facility at the port of Açu.
