              Anglo American announces increased stake in Gold Fields


Anglo American plc ("Anglo American") announces that it has recently acquired an
additional 3.9% stake in the ordinary shares of Gold Fields Limited ("Gold
Fields") bringing its total holding to 20%. As a result, the equity method of
accounting will be used with effect from 1 July 2002 for Anglo American's
holding in Gold Fields.
