                     APPOINTMENT OF NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR


Associated British Foods plc has today appointed Jeff Harris, Chairman of
Alliance Unichem plc to its Board as a non-executive director.

Mr Harris spent his earlier career as a chartered accountant with two major
auditing firms and joined Alliance Unichem in 1985 as chief accountant, becoming
the Finance Director in 1986.  He is a non-executive director of Bunzl plc.

The Board looks forward to the valuable contribution Mr Harris will make to the
Company.
