Appointment of Non-Executive Director

British Empire Trust plc ("the Company") is delighted to announce that Anja Balfour has been appointed as a non-executive Director of the Company with effect from 1 January 2018.

Ms Balfour has over 20 years' experience in managing Japanese and International Equity portfolios for Stewart Ivory, Baillie Gifford and Axa Framlington. Since stepping down from full time investment management in 2010 she has gained experience as a non-executive director and is currently a director of Martin Currie Asia Unconstrained Trust plc, of Schroder Japan Growth Fund plc and of F&C Global Smaller Companies plc. She recently stepped down as a trustee of Venture Scotland, a charity specialising in personal development for young people.

The Company confirms that there are no matters which are required to be disclosed under Listing Rule 9.6.13 (2) to (6).

As previously announced, Strone Macpherson will retire as non-executive Chairman of the Company following today's Annual General Meeting and existing non-executive Director Susan Noble will assume the role of Chairman.
