British Empire Sec & Gen Tst PLC 11 September 2007 BRITISH EMPIRE SECURITIES AND GENERAL TRUST PLC Performance Commentary This investment management report relates to performance figures as at 31 August 2007. Over the month NAV was down 2.6%1. This compares to a decrease in the benchmark of 1.1%2, an increase of 0.7%1 for the MSCI World (£) and a decrease of 0.3%1 for the FTSE All Share indices. Financial* year to date, net asset value rose 12.9%1 compared to a rise of 11.8%2 for the Datastream index, 7.5%1 for the MSCI World (£) and 10.1%1 for the FTSE All Share. Over three years NAV is up 90.0%1 while the FTSE All Share is up 62.0%1. Manager's Comment Markets fell strongly during the first half of the month only to rally into month's end and recoup most of their losses. Discounts on our universe of stocks widened, which hurt our monthly performance but gave us the opportunity to add to our favoured positions. We had been waiting for market weakness to buy back into the market and we reduced our net cash from 14% to 7% over the month.
