British Empire Sec & Gen Tst PLC 20 June 2007 BRITISH EMPIRE SECURITIES AND GENERAL TRUST PLC Performance Commentary This investment management report relates to performance figures as at 31 May 2007. Over the month NAV was up 4.4%1. This compares to an increase in the benchmark of 3.2%2, and an increase of 2.5%1 for the MSCI World (£) and 4.0%1 the FTSE All Share indices. Financial* year to date, net asset value rose 17.9%1 compared to a rise of 15.6%2 for the Datastream index, 13.0%1 for the MSCI World (£) and 15.1%1 for the FTSE All Share. Over three years NAV is up 113.8%1 while the FTSE All Share is up72.0%1. Manager's Comment Equity markets were strong again in May. It appears that the return on equity in the stock market still comfortably exceeds the cost of funding for private equity players and strategic buyers, thus inciting bids. This situation may continue for some time until a spike in interest rates or a fall in ROE brings an end to the profitability of these trades. Discounts on our universe of stocks has widened slightly so we feel more comfortable that we have a greater 'margin of safety' than in recent years. This has allowed us to become more fully invested.
