transition after contracts were signed in May this year. The contract, which is
now valued at circa £400 million will see Babcock Naval Services (BNS) working
over five years closely with Naval Base management and the Royal Navy to provide
specialist support services to the Naval Fleet.
Over 1,500 staff at the Clyde Naval Base have started work on Monday 2nd
September as employees of BNS.

About Babcock International Group PLC
Babcock International Group PLC is a support services business providing
technical services, training and facilities management to the defence and civil
sectors. In the year to 31 March 2002 sales from continuing business were
£358.9 million.
The Group operates in three principal sectors: Technical Services (engineering
and support services in defence, rail, marine and secure facilities sectors),
Training & Support (support services, training and facilities management for the
defence and civil sectors) and Materials Handling (material processing
technologies and engineered systems). The Group is currently in the process of
disposing of the Material Handling division as part of Babcock's strategy to
focus on the support services market and, in the process, enhance shareholder
value.
Babcock's head office is in London and the Company's shares are quoted on the
London Stock Exchange. For further information, please visit Babcock's website
at www.babcock.co.uk.
The Secretary of State's decision to proceed with partnering was announced on
25th March and a Partnering contract was signed in May with BNS, part of Babcock
International Group plc, for the Clyde Naval Base.
The new arrangements cover engineering and waterfront support, together with
some logistics, estates and facilities management at the three Naval Bases, and
include the transfer, with their current pay and conditions protected, of about
3,000 civil servants to the partnering companies.
Clyde Naval Base remains under the direct control of the Base Director. The
partnering programme will not compromise safety and security in any way, nor
will there be any operational impact on Britain's nuclear deterrent.
The Naval Base and BNS management teams have liaised closely with the Trades
Unions and the workforce throughout the transition period to resolve issues and
allay fears.
