The Board is pleased to announce that Sarah Whitley will be joining the Board
of Baillie Gifford Shin Nippon PLC with effect from 1 May 2001. Miss Whitley
is 42 years old. She is a Partner of Baillie Gifford & Co and has been the
manager of Baillie Gifford Shin Nippon PLC since its inception in 1985. She is
also the manager of The Baillie Gifford Japan Trust PLC.
