The Board of Baillie Gifford Shin Nippon PLC is pleased to announce the appointment of Francis Charig as a non-executive Director of the Company with effect from the conclusion of the 25 February Board meeting. Francis Charig, who is 44, has considerable knowledge of the Technology and Financial Services sectors in Japan. He is the founder and Chairman of Tao Group (provider of multi-media software). He is the former Chairman of the Open Contents Platform Association in Tokyo, Japan and the current Chairman of the Open Contents Platform User Group, Tokyo, Japan. The Chairman of Baillie Gifford Shin Nippon PLC, Michael Hathorn, commented: 'My fellow Directors and I are delighted to welcome Francis to the Board. Following a thorough process, we believe that we have appointed an individual who will further expand the Board's depth and breadth of knowledge of Japan and who will make a considerable contribution to the Company'. Francis Charig - Biography After completing a degree in Political Science at the University of Exeter, Francis Charig worked first as a software engineer and then as a project manager at Hoskyns, now Cap Gemini, Ernst & Young. After selling computer systems to large corporates, Francis then became the Head of the Trading Systems Business Unit at the London Stock Exchange in a successful joint enterprise with IBM. Francis co-founded Tao in 1992. His role has included being CEO of Tao Group, raising in the order of $55m in finance from such firms as Motorola, Sony, Mitsubishi, Kyocera, Sharp, NEC and Cross Atlantic, the recruitment of the management team, overseeing the company's strategy, sales & marketing and driving the company's technical direction.
