BALFOUR BEATTY PLC - BOARD APPOINTMENT



Balfour Beatty, the international engineering, construction and services group,
announces today that Richard Delbridge is to join the main board as a
non-executive Director with effect from 24 October 2002.



Mr Delbridge currently holds non-executive directorships at Egg plc, Tate and
Lyle PLC, Cazenove Group plc and Gallaher plc.



Richard Delbridge was Group Chief Financial Officer and a main board director of
National Westminster Bank plc from October 1996 to April 2000.  Prior to joining
NatWest he was Group Finance Director of HSBC Holdings plc.  He was a board
member of both HSBC Holdings plc and Midland Bank plc having joined Midland as
Finance Director in December 1989.  Previous employers include J P Morgan/Morgan
Guaranty Trust Co and Arthur Andersen & Co.



Welcoming the new appointment, Balfour Beatty Chairman Lord Weir said: 'Richard
brings excellent experience as a non-executive director in very diversified
international businesses.  He has an international outlook and a good knowledge
of the United States having spent six years there with J P Morgan.  His strong
City and financial background will complement that of our other non executive
directors and assist in the future development of the Balfour Beatty Group.'



Mr Delbridge, who is 60, is a Chartered Accountant, holds a degree in Economics
from London School of Economics and earned an MBA from the University of
California at Berkeley.
