BALFOUR BEATTY WINS £106 MILLION RAIL TERMINUS CONTRACT IN HONG KONG
Balfour Beatty, the international engineering, construction and services group,
announces today that it has been awarded the £106 million contract to construct
the Lok Ma Chau Terminus complex in Hong Kong by the Kowloon-Canton Railway
Corporation (KCRC). The station will be situated on the Shenzen River, which
separates Hong Kong from mainland China, and will relieve congestion pressure on
the existing passenger crossing between the two territories.
The project, which is due to commence early in 2003, involves the complete
construction of a reinforced concrete station including foundations, immigration
and customs halls, building services and architectural finishes. The contract
is due to be completed in the second half of 2006. Balfour Beatty will carry
out the work in conjunction with Lam Construction Co Ltd.
Commenting on the award today, Mike Welton, Chief Executive of Balfour Beatty
plc, said: 'I am very pleased to extend our already substantial presence in
Hong Kong with this major new project. We look forward to continuing to play
our part in the rapid development of Hong Kong's rail, road and air transport
systems.'
Balfour Beatty has a well-established and successful long-term presence in Hong
Kong. Amongst its many successful projects in recent years have been the £800
million terminal building for Chek Lap Kok Airport, trackwork and
electrification for the fast rail link between Hong Kong and the new airport and
all the building services work for the new Kowloon railway station.
Current projects in Hong Kong include the construction of the £245 million Nam
Cheong Station, also for KCRC, and the construction of the East Hall expansion
structures and reconfiguration of the existing departure hall at Hong Kong
Airport in a contract valued at approximately £40 million.
