Notification of directors' interests : Companies Act s329

The independent trustee of the Barclays Group (ESAS) Employees' Benefit Trust
(the 'Trust') notified the Company on 23 December 1999 that it purchased a
total of 58,145 ordinary shares on 20 December 1999 at a price of 1705p per
share.   None of the shares purchased was in respect of an award made to a
director of Barclays PLC.

Mr D P Allvey notified the Company on 14 December 1999 that on 27 July 1999
Miss A C Davies (a connected person) purchased 550 ordinary shares in the
Company at a price of 1742p per share.   Mr Allvey now has a beneficial
interest in 500 ordinary shares of Barclays PLC and a non-beneficial interest
in 1,000 ordinary shares in Barclays PLC.

The Trust is a discretionary trust for the benefit of employees and former
employees (and, in each case, their families) of Barclays Bank PLC and its
subsidiaries.  Following this transaction, the trustees of all the Barclays
Group employees' benefit trusts hold a total of 9,178,672 shares in Barclays
PLC in which the following directors of Barclays PLC have an interest as
potential beneficiaries: Mr D P Allvey, Mr M W Barrett, Sir Andrew Large, Mr C
J Lendrum, Sir Peter Middleton and Mr J S Varley.
