NEW BOARD MEMBERS ANNOUNCED
British Airways has appointed three new Board Directors.
Rod Eddington (50), the airline's recently-appointed Chief
Executive, has formally joined the Board as an Executive
Director. Martin Broughton, Chairman of British American
Tobacco p.l.c. and Dr. Martin Read, Managing Director and
Chief Executive of Logica plc, have been appointed Non-
Executive Directors.
Mr Broughton (53) is a Chartered Accountant with
extensive, international business experience. Before
joining the B.A.T Industries Board, he was Finance
Director of Eagle Star. He has also held the positions of
Chairman of Wiggins Teape Paper and Chairman of Eagle
Star.
Dr Read (50) is a graduate of Cambridge University and
holds a research doctorate from Oxford. He has held
several senior international positions during his career
including roles with P&O Nedlloyd Containers, Courtaulds
plc, and with GEC Marconi.
The three new Directors will be required to stand for
election by shareholders at the company's annual meeting
in London on July 11.
Sir Michael Angus, currently non-Executive Deputy
Chairman, will step down from the Board at that time,
having reached the statutory age of retirement.

will be sorry to lose the knowledge and wisdom of Sir
Michael Angus, I am delighted to see our Board
strengthened with the appointment of these highly-
respected and experienced business leaders. I look

-Born in 1950 in Perth, Western Australia, Rod
Eddington was educated at the University of Western
Australia and Oxford University (the 1974 Rhodes Scholar
from Western Australia). He completed a D Phil in the
Department of Engineering Science at Oxford and taught as
research lecturer at Pembroke College, Oxford, in 1978-79.
Mr Eddington joined Swire Group in 1979 and worked with
Cathay Pacific Airways in Hong Kong, Korea and Japan, in
a variety of roles, before being appointed Managing
Director in early 1992. News Limited appointed Mr
Eddington as Executive Chairman of Ansett in January
1997.
He was appointed Chief Executive of British Airways with
effect from May 1, 2000.
-Born in 1947 in London, Martin Broughton was educated
at Westminster City Grammar School. After qualifying as a
chartered accountant he joined Peat Marwick Mitchell and
Company. He joined British American Tobacco as an
international auditor and held a number of senior
financial positions. In 1988, he was appointed to the
main Board of B.A.T Industries as Finance Director. He
has been Chairman of Wiggins Teape Paper, and Chairman of
Eagle Star.
In April 1993, he was appointed Group Chief Executive
and Deputy Chairman of B.A.T Industries before becoming
Chairman of British American Tobacco p.l.c. in 1998.
Until 1999 he was Chairman of the Companies Committee of
the Confederation of British Industry. He is a member
of the Financial Reporting Council, and a Director of
the British Horseracing Board. He will be stepping down
from his current role as a Non-Executive Director of
Whitbread at their next annual general meeting.
-Born in 1950, Dr Martin Read is a graduate of
Cambridge University with a research doctorate from
Oxford. Dr Read began his career at Overseas Containers
Limited (now P&O Nedlloyd Containers) where he held
various international positions. He subsequently held
positions at the International Paint subsidiary of
Courtaulds where he was Commercial Director of the
worldwide marine business, and with GEC Marconi with
responsibility for the Communications divisions of Marconi
Defence Systems and thereafter for the Radar and Control
Systems group of companies.
In 1993, Dr Read became Managing Director and Chief
Executive of Logica plc, where the market capitalisation
has grown from around £130 million in 1993 to around
£7.3 billion today. He was a Non-Executive Director of
ASDA Group plc from 1996 to 1999, and is also a current
Non-Executive Director of Boots plc.
