Traffic & Capacity Statistics

British Airways PLC 5 February 2002 TRAFFIC AND CAPACITY STATISTICS - JANUARY 2002 Summary of the headline figures Capacity in January, measured in Available Seat Kilometres, was 11.5 per cent below January 2001. Traffic, measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres, fell 6.9 per cent. The reduction in traffic comprised a 10.4 per cent decline in premium traffic and a 6.3 per cent fall in non-premium traffic. Passenger load factor of 68.5 per cent was up 3.4 points on January 2001. Cargo, measured in Cargo Tonne Kilometres, fell by 5.0 per cent. Market conditions The improvements seen in traffic in recent months have continued through January, despite the ongoing economic weakness in many of our key markets. The revenue outlook remains positive although yields are weak, driven by ongoing promotional activity and the adverse mix of premium and non-premium traffic. Strategic developments In response to the US Department of Transportation's regulatory conditions for the proposed alliance between British Airways and American Airlines Rod Eddington, British Airways' Chief Executive and Don Carty, Chairman and Chief Executive, American Airlines, said: 'We will not do this deal at this price. We made it clear from the start that we would not conclude the deal if the regulatory price was too high. Regrettably this has proved to be the case. The conditions laid down by the US government do not make sense for either company.' American Airlines remains British Airways' partner of choice across the Atlantic. British Airways and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines agreed to initiate a short term network and frequent flyer arrangement on selected flights to the Middle East this summer. The six month arrangement will help the two carriers maximise their services to the Middle East, following the significant downturn in passenger demand since the terrorist attacks on September 11 in the USA. KLM will temporarily suspend flights from Amsterdam to Muscat. British Airways will add an additional frequency between London and Muscat which will upgrade its schedule from six times a week to a daily operation. British Airways will temporarily suspend its four times a week schedule between Heathrow and Dammam in Saudi Arabia. KLM will continue with four weekly flights to this destination from Amsterdam. ends February 5, 2002 018/LE/02 BRITISH AIRWAYS MONTHLY TRAFFIC AND CAPACITY STATISTICS Month of January Financial year to date April through January BRITISH AIRWAYS GROUP Change Change SCHEDULED SERVICES 2002 2001 (%) 2001/2 2000/1 (%) Passengers carried (000) UK/Europe 1793 1900 -5.6 23259 23685 -1.8 Americas 504 549 -8.2 5613 6992 -19.7 Asia Pacific 159 167 -5.0 1478 1816 -18.7 Africa and Middle East 236 258 -8.5 2322 2493 -6.9 Total 2692 2874 -6.3 32671 34987 -6.6 Revenue passenger km (m) UK/Europe 1375 1522 -9.7 18695 19708 -5.1 Americas 3496 3794 -7.9 38374 47792 -19.7 Asia Pacific 1654 1690 -2.2 14894 17952 -17.0 Africa and Middle East 1615 1735 -7.0 15715 16477 -4.6 Total 8139 8742 -6.9 87678 101929 -14.0 Available seat km (m) UK/Europe 2576 3016 -14.6 29827 30516 -2.3 Americas 4999 5758 -13.2 53341 63505 -16.0 Asia Pacific 2149 2205 -2.5 20485 23332 -12.2 Africa and Middle East 2153 2444 -11.9 22317 24373 -8.4 Total 11877 13422 -11.5 125970 141726 -11.1 Passenger load factor (%) UK/Europe 53.4 50.5 +2.9 pts 62.7 64.6 -1.9 pts Americas 69.9 65.9 +4.0 pts 71.9 75.3 -3.4 pts Asia Pacific 76.9 76.7 +0.2 pts 72.7 76.9 -4.2 pts Africa and Middle East 75.0 71.0 +4.0 pts 70.4 67.6 +2.8 pts Total 68.5 65.1 +3.4 pts 69.6 71.9 -2.3 pts Revenue tonne km (RTK) (m) Cargo tonne km (CTK) 308 325 -5.0 3334 4002 -16.7 Total RTK 1133 1206 -6.1 12102 14191 -14.7 Available tonne km (m) 1810 1971 -8.2 19130 20876 -8.4 Overall load factor (%) 62.6 61.2 +1.4 pts 63.3 68.0 -4.7 pts This information is provided by RNS The company news service from the London Stock Exchange
